The Malt Barn Studio

The Malt Barn Studio is an exercise studio situated in the heart of St. Andrews in a quiet courtyard just off South street. It occupies half of the beautifully refurbished top floor in an historic 200 year old building. We are a group of teachers who come from a wide variety of backgrounds but are united in our belief that the exercise systems we teach (Pilates and Yoga) can be open to all people of different ages and sexes and that the body and mind can be brought back into harmony through developing an awareness and sensitivity from a deeper approach to exercise. Sadly the Tai Chi classes are no longer available as the wonderful James Russell has moved abroad, but we are continuing to search for a replacement.

We specialise in small classes with a maximum of 8 or 9 people. This allows for a more careful teaching approach with hands on guidance whenever required, giving clients a more accurate and secure experience. The Malt Barn is also the only studio in St Andrews to offer one-to-one Pilates Apparatus sessions, which are especially good for clients who have back or joint injuries. Please contact Shelagh for further details.

Bad Posture is not necessarily an age related problem; it can afflict all of us at various times due to any number of factors; from stress, illness and simply the habits we develop as a consequence of modern life.

We do not represent a ‘quick fix’ approach to exercise, but by participating in any of the practices we offer, you will be taking up a more holistic approach. In time you will gain improved balance, a greater sense of increased space in your joints and more lift in the spine. You will develop better breathing patterns and clear thinking, your gait and stance will acquire ease and grace.

We look forward to seeing you at The Malt Barn Studio.

Winter / Spring 2022 class blocks – dates & fees

We operate a block-booking system for Pilates which provides continuity and development of the individual in their practice; this is difficult to achieve with an exclusively drop-in approach.

Block 1
Monday 10th January – Saturday 19th February
6 weeks
£60

Teachers may individually decide to take a week off between the two blocks to make one of them a 5 week block,
please discuss this with your teacher to find out.

Block 2
Monday 21st February – Saturday 2nd April
6 weeks
£60

We ask that whenever possible you pay by direct debit to your teacher. If you are unable to attend class because you are self-isolating, you may find your teacher is willing to Zoom the class live as they teach the in-person attendees.

Our drop-in fee is £12.00 (teacher’s require 24 hours advance notice).

PLEASE NOTE:

24 hour cancellation notice is required on all one-to-one equipment classes otherwise clients will be required to pay the full fee of £40.

Risk Assessment – to be read by every class member and teacher:

  • Please be on time, and be aware that some people may want to keep a social distance.
  • Masks are no longer mandatory in class but up to individual discretion.
  • If you wish your teacher to wear a mask when giving you hands-on guidance please tell them at the beginning of class.
  • The windows will be kept open for maximum air flow, obviously as it gets colder it will necessitate wearing layers and warmer clothes. The heating will be put on too.
  • Please could you use the hand sanitizer when entering and leaving the building and wear your mask at this time too.
  • Leave all your coats and shoes in the corridor area but bring in your bags and personal items and leave them on the windowsill or shelves if possible.
  • Bring your own mat and small equipment wherever possible, although sanitised mats and equipment such as weights if you don't want to bring them in will be provided.
  • You will be expected to fill in a new medical form at the beginning of every Autumn term, this can be downloaded from the link above.
  • If you or someone close to you gets ‘pinged’ or is ill please refrain from attending class for the time recommended (presently 1 week). Your class might well go ahead for you via Zoom, see the class details and talk to your teacher about this. If you feel you have a cold please stay away too!
